We are very excited to be offering several fun and unique summer camps at our new Heeling House Center in the summer of 2017!
All of our summer camps include participation with at least one of our therapy animal teams. Our camps are open to children of various ages and abilities. If you have a child with special needs, please feel free to call our office at 703-661-6610 to discuss which camp would best fit your child’s needs. Camp Descriptions: Junior Dog Trainer Camp (ages 9 to 15) Heeling House’s Junior Dog Trainer Camp is a highly specialized program that accepts 10 campers per camp week. In this unique camp, children work hands on with a professional dog trainer and spend the week training shelter dogs in basic obedience in order to help them have a successful journey to their new home! Children accepted into this program will learn all the key fundamentals of positive reinforcement dog training, as well as basic dog health, care, and nutrition. Campers will work individually, and in small groups to train shelter dogs over the week long program. They will spend several hours a day working with and caring for their assigned dog, as well as classroom time to work on training techniques and commands. This program will provide shelter dogs the chance of a lifetime skills to help them be adopted into a loving home. Animals participating in our camp are rigorously tested for temperament and safety when working in a group setting by a professional dog handler prior to being selected. At the end of each week-long session, campers wrap things up with an adoption event on the Saturday following camp from 10:00-12:00. All About Animals (ages 5-7) and (ages 8-14) Campers explore the world of animals, and learn about the habits and biology of our therapy animals including ponies, rabbits, turtles and of course dogs! Children will learn through hands on activities, crafts, projects and games. Campers participate in activities with different animals each day, and learn about animal safety, body language, and communication. Book a Day (Ages 5-7) and (Ages 8-12) Designed to introduce young campers to how fun reading a story can be! Each day will feature a different book. After reading the book, campers will spend the day exploring the story through dramatic play, games, movies and art projects. These activities will provide opportunities for the children to build their vocabularies and expand their comprehension. We’ll also work on sight words, fluency, letters, and sounds. Our R.E.A.D. therapy dogs will be attending this camp to encourage learning and confidence from our campers! STEM Camp (Ages 8 -12) A certified therapy dog team from Heeling House will join the students in this very unique STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) summer program. The therapy dog and children together will explore the world in fun and playful ways that foster the development of collaborative teamwork. The different activities will also assist students in developing foundational STEM skills such as observation, measurement, data collection, experimentation and early critical thinking skills.
